What teaching placements look like
India offers an enormous variety of teaching placements. Most common: classroom support in community NGO schools (Delhi slums, Chennai outskirts, Jaipur), supplementary English programs, women's empowerment classes, and rural community schools.
Choose by region carefully
India is vast — Kerala is very different from Delhi, which is very different from Darjeeling. Pick a region you've researched, not just "India". Most first-time volunteers do better in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh or Goa than in mega-cities.
Refuse — orphanage and unvetted residential programs
India has significant residential-care concerns. Refuse orphanage placements regardless of how the program describes them. Choose community-based education support, NGO programs, or family-strengthening work instead.
Realistic impact
Skills-matched volunteers (qualified teachers, native English speakers with TEFL) can meaningfully contribute. Unqualified short-term volunteers add supplementary exposure but nothing transformational.
Best months
Northern India: October-March (avoid summer heat 35-45°C). Southern India: November- February (avoid monsoon and summer heat). Hill stations: April-October.
Typical cost
Community teaching placements in India commonly run USD 150-450/week. Confirm with each program. NGO-direct placements can be substantially cheaper.
