Teaching Volunteer Programs in India
India offers an enormous range of community teaching placements across many states, from urban NGO programs to rural community schools. This page covers what good placements look like, how to choose by region, and how to avoid harmful orphanage programs.

What teaching placements look like
India offers an enormous variety of teaching placements. Most common: classroom support in community NGO schools (Delhi slums, Chennai outskirts, Jaipur), supplementary English programs, women's empowerment classes, and rural community schools.
Choose by region carefully
India is vast — Kerala is very different from Delhi, which is very different from Darjeeling. Pick a region you've researched, not just "India". Most first-time volunteers do better in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh or Goa than in mega-cities.
Refuse — orphanage and unvetted residential programs
India has significant residential-care concerns. Refuse orphanage placements regardless of how the program describes them. Choose community-based education support, NGO programs, or family-strengthening work instead.
Realistic impact
Skills-matched volunteers (qualified teachers, native English speakers with TEFL) can meaningfully contribute. Unqualified short-term volunteers add supplementary exposure but nothing transformational.
Best months
Northern India: October-March (avoid summer heat 35-45°C). Southern India: November- February (avoid monsoon and summer heat). Hill stations: April-October.
Typical cost
Community teaching placements in India commonly run USD 150-450/week. Confirm with each program. NGO-direct placements can be substantially cheaper.
Considerations for India
Editorial summary, not legal or safety advice. Always verify current conditions with your home country's official travel advisory before booking.

Solo female travelers
India has a documented harassment problem in some areas — verify the placement location and host's track record with solo female volunteers in writing. Many female volunteers travel safely; some don't. Independent verification matters more here than in most destinations.
LGBTQ+ context
Section 377 was struck down in 2018; same-sex relationships are legal. Social acceptance varies enormously between urban-cosmopolitan and rural-conservative areas. Marriage is not recognised. Cross-reference the FCDO/US State Department briefings for the specific city.
See our LGBTQ+ research framework →India-specific scam and provider red flags
- Voluntourism schools and orphanages that exist primarily to extract foreign volunteer fees — India has a documented pattern; verify the receiving partner exists independently.
- 'Medical shadowing' programs that quietly include hands-on clinical work — refuse on arrival if scope expands beyond what's licensed.
- Tour-style 'volunteer trips' to slum communities — uneven on consent, often performative.
- Pre-payment in full before arrival with limited refund policy.
Questions to ask any India provider in writing
- Are you registered with the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) for any foreign-donation movement of the fee?
- (For female volunteers) Can you connect me with two recent female volunteers at this specific placement?
- (For pre-med) What's your written policy on what I can and cannot do in the clinical setting?
Plus the universal questions in our voluntourism red flags guide.
Next steps for India
Most volunteers benefit from working through these in order, before contacting any specific provider.
Compare with other destinations
If India isn't the only option you're weighing, the destination matcher narrows the field by budget, interests and safety preference.
Estimate the full trip cost
Program fee + flights + insurance + visa + in-country + buffer. Most volunteers underestimate the total by 30-50%.
