    Volunteer in India

Make a meaningful difference across diverse communities β€” from teaching English in Rajasthan to supporting women's empowerment in Kerala and healthcare outreach in the Himalayas.

    Considerations for India

Editorial summary, not legal or safety advice. Always verify current conditions with your home country's official travel advisory before booking.

    Destination editorial data last reviewed:

    Solo female travelers

India has a documented harassment problem in some areas β€” verify the placement location and host's track record with solo female volunteers in writing. Many female volunteers travel safely; some don't. Independent verification matters more here than in most destinations.

    LGBTQ+ context

Section 377 was struck down in 2018; same-sex relationships are legal. Social acceptance varies enormously between urban-cosmopolitan and rural-conservative areas. Marriage is not recognised. Cross-reference the FCDO/US State Department briefings for the specific city.

India-specific scam and provider red flags

    • Voluntourism schools and orphanages that exist primarily to extract foreign volunteer fees β€” India has a documented pattern; verify the receiving partner exists independently.
    • 'Medical shadowing' programs that quietly include hands-on clinical work β€” refuse on arrival if scope expands beyond what's licensed.
    • Tour-style 'volunteer trips' to slum communities β€” uneven on consent, often performative.
    • Pre-payment in full before arrival with limited refund policy.

Questions to ask any India provider in writing

    1. Are you registered with the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) for any foreign-donation movement of the fee?
    2. (For female volunteers) Can you connect me with two recent female volunteers at this specific placement?
    3. (For pre-med) What's your written policy on what I can and cannot do in the clinical setting?

Plus the universal questions in our voluntourism red flags guide.

    Next steps for India

Most volunteers benefit from working through these in order, before contacting any specific provider.

    Why Volunteer in India?

India is one of the most rewarding volunteering destinations in the world. Its sheer diversity β€” from the snow-capped Himalayas to the tropical backwaters of Kerala β€” means every volunteer placement offers a completely unique experience.

Millions of children in rural India still lack access to quality education, healthcare remains scarce in remote villages, and women continue to fight for equal opportunities. Volunteers who come to India don't just observe β€” they become part of a movement for change.

Whether you're teaching English to eager students in Jaipur, supporting maternal health clinics in Tamil Nadu, or mentoring young women entrepreneurs in Udaipur, your contribution creates ripples of lasting impact.

    Community development in India

    Incredible Cultural Diversity

India's 28 states each offer unique languages, cuisines and traditions. Volunteers experience an unparalleled cultural immersion that deepens global understanding.

    High-Impact Education Programs

With over 260 million children in school, volunteer teachers in rural India directly improve literacy, English fluency and digital skills for underserved communities.

    Women's Empowerment Initiatives

Support self-help groups, vocational training and microfinance programs that help women in rural areas achieve economic independence and social equality.

    Healthcare Outreach

Assist community health workers with preventive care, hygiene education and mobile clinics in villages that lack access to hospitals and trained doctors.

    What to Expect in India

Practical information to help you prepare for your volunteer experience.

    Language

Hindi and English are the two official languages, and English is widely used in cities, tourism and business. India has 22 officially recognised languages and hundreds of dialects β€” you may hear Tamil in the south, Bengali in the east and Marathi in Mumbai. Most volunteer programs operate in English. Learning a few Hindi phrases like "Namaste" (hello) and "Dhanyavaad" (thank you) will be warmly appreciated by locals.

    Currency & Transport

The Indian rupee (INR) is the local currency. India is extremely affordable β€” expect to spend $10-20/day on food and local transport. Auto-rickshaws, buses and trains are the main ways to get around. The Indian railway network is vast and affordable for longer journeys. Ride-hailing apps like Ola and Uber work well in cities. ATMs are widely available, and UPI digital payments are accepted almost everywhere.

    Health & Safety

No vaccinations are mandatory for entry (unless arriving from a yellow fever zone), but hepatitis A, typhoid and tetanus boosters are strongly recommended. Tap water is not safe to drink β€” use bottled or filtered water at all times. Avoid street food until your stomach adjusts. Malaria prophylaxis is advisable for rural areas. India is generally safe for volunteers, but be aware of petty theft in crowded areas and always use registered transport.

    Cultural Tips for India

Understanding local customs will help you connect more deeply with your host community and show respect for Indian culture.

    Greetings & Namaste

The traditional Indian greeting is "Namaste" β€” press your palms together at chest level and bow slightly. This is universally understood and deeply appreciated. Handshakes are common in business settings but avoid initiating a handshake with women unless they extend their hand first. Address elders with respect, using "ji" as a suffix (e.g. "Auntie-ji").

    Dress Code

Dress conservatively, especially in rural areas and religious sites. Cover your shoulders and knees when visiting temples, mosques and gurudwaras. Remove your shoes before entering any place of worship or someone's home. Women should carry a scarf or shawl to cover their heads when required at religious sites. Loose, breathable cotton clothing is ideal for the heat.

    Food Etiquette

Always eat with your right hand β€” the left is considered unclean. Many Indians eat with their fingers, especially when eating roti, dosa or rice dishes. Remove your shoes before entering a dining area if others have done so. Accept chai (tea) when offered, as refusing can be seen as impolite. Vegetarianism is widespread; always ask about dietary customs in your host community.

    Tipping Customs

Tipping is appreciated but not always expected. In restaurants, 10% is generous if a service charge is not included. Tip porters, drivers and guides 50-100 rupees for good service. In small local eateries, rounding up the bill is sufficient. Tipping your rickshaw or taxi driver is not expected but appreciated for longer journeys or exceptional service.

    Religious Diversity

India is home to Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, Buddhism, Christianity and Jainism. Religious festivals are frequent and spectacular β€” you may experience Diwali, Holi, Eid or Pongal during your stay. Be respectful of all faiths, observe silence in places of worship, and ask before photographing religious ceremonies. Understanding this diversity is key to appreciating Indian culture.

    Bargaining

Bargaining is expected and enjoyed in markets, street stalls and with rickshaw drivers. Start at about 40-50% of the asking price and negotiate with a smile. Fixed-price shops, malls and restaurants do not expect bargaining. Never bargain aggressively β€” keep it friendly and good-humoured. Walking away is a legitimate negotiation tactic and often brings the price down.
