    • Most volunteer trips: Sri Lanka Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) — apply online before travel.
    • Longer placements: Tourist ETA with extension at Department of Immigration in Colombo.

    Verify before booking

Check the official ETA portal (eta.gov.lk). This page is editorial guidance.

    Sri Lanka ETA

Apply online before travel. Tourist ETA: 30-day, double-entry, ~USD 50 + processing. Approval usually within 24 hours but allow 2-3 days. Bring the printed ETA on arrival.

    Extensions

Extend the tourist ETA at the Department of Immigration in Colombo. First extension to 90 days then further to 180 days. Each extension has a fee. Plan ahead — don't leave it to the last week.
