English is one of two official languages and is widely spoken across the country — in schools, government, media and business. Filipino (based on Tagalog) is the national language, and each region has its own dialect (Cebuano, Ilocano, Waray, etc.). Communication is easy for English speakers, making the Philippines one of the most accessible volunteer destinations in Asia.
The Philippine peso (PHP) is the local currency. The Philippines is very affordable — budget $15-25/day for food and local transport. Getting between islands involves a mix of domestic flights, ferries and bangka boats. Budget airlines like Cebu Pacific offer affordable inter-island flights. Jeepneys and tricycles are the main urban transport. ATMs are available in cities.
No mandatory vaccinations, but Hepatitis A, Typhoid and routine immunisations are recommended. Use reef-safe sunscreen to protect the marine ecosystems you will be helping to conserve. Drink bottled or purified water. Be aware of typhoon season (July-October) and follow local advisories. Ask your program provider what in-country emergency support and arrival orientation they offer.

Visa Extensions: Most nationalities receive a free 30-day visa on arrival. For longer volunteer placements, you can extend your stay at any Bureau of Immigration office for up to 36 months total. Each extension costs approximately 3,000-4,000 PHP ($55-75 USD).
Tip: If staying beyond 59 days, you will also need an ACR I-Card (Alien Certificate of Registration) which costs around 3,000 PHP. Ask your program provider whether they assist with extension paperwork for you, so you can focus on your volunteer work. Always carry a photocopy of your passport and latest visa extension.
The Philippines has a tropical maritime climate with two main seasons: a dry season (December-May) and a wet season (June-November). Typhoon season runs from July to October, primarily affecting the eastern seaboard and northern Luzon. The Visayas and western islands are generally less affected. Temperatures remain warm year-round, with high humidity.

December to May offers the best underwater visibility for reef surveys. Whale shark season in Donsol runs November to June, with peak sightings February to April. Pack reef-safe sunscreen, light quick-dry clothing, and waterproof bags for electronics.

Filipinos show deep respect for elders by adding "po" or "opo" to sentences and performing "mano" — taking an elder's hand and pressing it to your forehead. When meeting someone older, a slight bow or nod is appropriate. Using "Ate" (older sister) and "Kuya" (older brother) as forms of address shows cultural awareness.
"Bayanihan" is the Filipino tradition of communal unity — neighbours helping neighbours without expecting anything in return. As a volunteer, you will experience this firsthand. Accept invitations graciously, participate in community events and share meals when offered. This spirit of mutual aid is at the heart of Filipino culture.
Filipinos love to eat and share food. Adobo, sinigang, lechon and lumpia are national favourites. Meals are social events — "Kain tayo!" (Let's eat!) is an invitation you will hear often. Always accept food when offered, even if just a small portion. "Pakikisama" (getting along with others) extends to the dining table.
Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. A 10% tip at restaurants is standard if service charge is not included. Round up taxi fares. In local markets, bargaining is expected and done with a friendly smile. In malls and supermarkets, prices are fixed. Small tips to porters, guides and hotel staff are always welcome.
The Philippines is the largest Christian nation in Asia, with over 80% Catholic. Religious festivals (fiestas) are vibrant, colourful and deeply important community events. Sinulog in Cebu, Ati-Atihan in Aklan and Pahiyas in Lucban are among the most famous. Volunteers are warmly welcomed to participate — just dress respectfully.
Filipinos generally love having their photo taken and are enthusiastic about social media. However, always ask permission first, especially with children and in communities you are volunteering with. Sharing photos on social media is fine but be thoughtful about how you portray communities — avoid "poverty tourism" imagery and highlight dignity and resilience instead.
