Kenya Volunteer Visa Requirements: What You Need

Kenya moved to an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) system that applies to most foreign visitors. Below is a general overview — always confirm with the official Kenya eTA portal before booking.

    The short answer

    • Most volunteer trips (under 90 days): Kenya eTA, applied for online before travel.
    • Longer stays (3+ months): Volunteer work permit (Class M) — sponsored by your placement organisation.
    • East African Tourist Visa: Allows multi-entry to Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda for tourist purposes.

    Verify before booking

Visa policy in Kenya has changed several times in recent years. Always check the official Kenya eTA portal (etakenya.go.ke) and the Kenya Directorate of Immigration website before booking flights. This page is editorial guidance, not immigration advice.

    Kenya eTA

Required in advance for almost all visitors. Apply online; processing typically 1-3 business days but can take longer in peak periods (apply at least 2 weeks before travel). Cost roughly USD 30-35 including processing fee, valid for a single entry of up to 90 days.

    Volunteer / work permit (Class M / Class N)

For longer placements, your sponsoring organisation files for an appropriate permit on your behalf. This is the right route for any placement over 90 days or any role that could be construed as paid work. Costs and processing depend on the permit class.

    Common mistakes

    • Trying to enter on visa-exempt status — most nationalities now need an eTA in advance.
    • Applying for the eTA via unofficial third-party sites that charge extra fees — use etakenya.go.ke.
    • Overstaying — fines and re-entry bans apply.
    • Not checking yellow fever certificate requirements before arrival (required from many countries).

    Documents to have ready

    • Passport valid 6+ months from entry with at least 2 blank pages.
    • Onward / return ticket (often checked).
    • Proof of accommodation (program letter is ideal).
    • Yellow fever certificate if arriving from an endemic country.
    • Funds for length of stay (rarely verified but technically required).

    Useful official sources

Always verify via the Kenya eTA portal (etakenya.go.ke) and the Kenya Directorate of Immigration. Independent visa-advice sites can lag behind policy changes.

    Considerations for Kenya

Editorial summary, not legal or safety advice. Always verify current conditions with your home country's official travel advisory before booking.

    Destination editorial data last reviewed:

    Solo female travelers

Workable for experienced solo female travelers; Nairobi requires standard urban precautions, coastal and reserve areas are usually less issue-prone. Verify the program's transport and after-dark policies.

    LGBTQ+ context

Same-sex activity is criminalised under Kenyan law. Enforcement is uneven and discreet expat/LGBTQ+ communities exist in Nairobi, but the legal risk is real. Verify with current FCDO/US State Department guidance — this is one of the countries where the visibility-choice decision in our LGBTQ+ guide is most consequential.

Kenya-specific scam and provider red flags

    • 'Wildlife sanctuaries' that allow tourist contact with captive animals — refuse on first mention of riding, bathing, walking with, or cub interactions.
    • Childcare and orphanage programs — refuse for the same reasons that apply globally.
    • 'Safari + volunteer' packages where the safari is the real product and the volunteer activity is a marketing layer.
    • Bus / driver scams in Nairobi — verify program transport is arranged in advance.

Questions to ask any Kenya provider in writing

    1. Is the wildlife project registered with KWS (Kenya Wildlife Service) and what's the conservation methodology?
    2. What's the local-staff-to-volunteer ratio on the project?
    3. What's your protocol if I'm asked to do something that violates animal welfare standards?

Plus the universal questions in our voluntourism red flags guide.

    Next steps for Kenya

Most volunteers benefit from working through these in order, before contacting any specific provider.
