Free volunteer-abroad planning tools
Seven free, rule-based tools to help you plan and screen a volunteer trip abroad — before you put down a deposit or talk to a provider.
All tools run in your browser. No paid AI APIs. No data sent to third parties (we use Google Analytics only — see our privacy policy). Outputs are editorial guidance, not legal, medical or immigration advice.
Destination matcher
Rule-based matcher that recommends destinations based on budget, interests, safety preference and traveller profile. No AI black box.
For: First-time volunteers, students, anyone deciding where to go
Cost calculator
Estimate total trip cost — program fee, flights, insurance, visa, in-country expenses, and contingency. Editorial estimates, not provider quotes.
For: Anyone with a budget question (most people)
Ethical red-flag checker
Walks you through a structured screen — orphanage involvement, unqualified medical work, unethical wildlife interaction, sales-pressure tactics. Returns concrete red flags, not a score.
For: Anyone before paying a deposit
Impact calculator
Qualitative impact estimator. Returns likely contribution areas, risks, and questions to ask — not fake precise numbers.
For: Anyone tempted by overstated impact claims
Packing assistant
Generates a destination-, climate- and program-aware packing checklist drawn from local data, including conservative-dress and clinical-setting variants.
For: Anyone within 8 weeks of departure
Pre-departure checklist
Step-by-step planning checklist — visa, insurance, vaccinations, money, safeguarding, emergency contacts. Save progress locally.
For: Anyone within 12 weeks of departure
Parent approval pack
Printable parent / guardian briefing — destination advisory, safeguarding questions, money plan, emergency contacts, insurance must-haves. For under-18 volunteers and nervous parents of any age.
For: Parents, guardians, anyone vetting a program for someone else
Why no AI tools?
Volunteer-abroad decisions affect real money, real safety, and other people's lives. We deliberately don't use AI to generate program recommendations or risk scores — AI hallucinations on safety or ethics topics aren't acceptable.
Every tool here uses transparent rules and editorial data you can audit on this site. See our program review methodology and editorial policy for the framework these tools apply.
