    Considerations for Ghana

Editorial summary, not legal or safety advice. Always verify current conditions with your home country's official travel advisory before booking.

    Destination editorial data last reviewed:

    Solo female travelers

Generally welcoming for solo female travelers; established Accra expat community. Standard urban precautions in Accra. Beaches and rural areas mostly low-risk. Conservative-leaning culture; modest dress in towns and rural areas (less so on tourist beaches).

    LGBTQ+ context

Same-sex activity is criminalised; a 2024 anti-LGBTQ+ bill was passed by parliament and has been challenged in court. Real legal and social risk. Verify current FCDO / US State Department guidance.

Ghana-specific scam and provider red flags

    • 'Orphanage' volunteer programs — Ghana is one of the most well-documented orphanage-tourism countries in West Africa.
    • Cultural-tourism 'volunteer' programs in which volunteers are themselves the tourist product.
    • Online recruiters offering 'free volunteering' in exchange for upfront 'admin fees' — usually scams.
    • Voluntary teaching programs at unaccredited 'schools' that have sprung up around the volunteer-tourism market.

Questions to ask any Ghana provider in writing

    1. Is the program registered with the Department of Social Welfare (for children's services) or relevant Ghanaian ministry?
    2. Are placements at residential children's homes? (Refuse if yes.)
    3. What's the school's accreditation with the Ghana Education Service?
    4. What's your visa pathway, and how have past volunteers cleared immigration?

Plus the universal questions in our voluntourism red flags guide.

    Why Volunteer in Ghana?

Ghana — often called the "Gateway to West Africa" — is one of the continent's most stable and welcoming nations. Its English-speaking population, rich cultural traditions and strong sense of community make it a top choice for first-time volunteers.

From the colourful fishing boats of Cape Coast to the vast savannas of the north, Ghana offers an authentic African experience paired with genuine opportunities to make a difference. Education remains the most requested area of support, but healthcare outreach and community infrastructure also benefit enormously from volunteer contributions.

Our partnerships with schools in the Volta and Ashanti Regions, community health centres in Tamale and women's cooperatives across the Northern Region ensure that your efforts are directed where they are needed most. With over 280 volunteers placed annually, our programs are proven, ethical and deeply embedded in local communities.

    What to Expect in Ghana

Practical information to help you prepare for your volunteer experience.

    Language

English is the official language and widely spoken in cities, schools and government. You will also hear Twi, Ga, Ewe and Hausa depending on the region. Learning a few phrases in the local language — such as "Akwaaba" (welcome) in Twi — will earn you warm smiles and deeper connections with your host community. Most volunteer projects operate in English, so no prior language study is required.

    Currency & Transport

The Ghanaian cedi (GHS) is the local currency. Ghana is an affordable destination — expect to spend $15-25/day on food and local transport. Tro-tros (shared minibuses) are the most common way to get around and cost very little. ATMs are available in cities but scarce in rural areas, so carry cash for village visits. Ride-hailing apps like Bolt work well in Accra.

    Health & Safety

Ghana is one of Africa's safest countries with a stable democracy and low crime rates. Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for entry. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended — take anti-malarials and use insect repellent. Tap water is not safe to drink — stick to bottled or sachet water ("pure water"). Our in-country team provides 24/7 support and orientation upon arrival.

Important: Ghana requires a visa for most nationalities, which must be obtained before travel. Apply through the nearest Ghanaian embassy or consulate. Processing typically takes 5-10 business days but can take longer during peak periods, so apply at least 4 weeks before departure.

Tip: You will also need proof of yellow fever vaccination — carry your yellow vaccination booklet when travelling. For stays longer than 60 days, extensions can be arranged through Ghana Immigration Service in Accra. VolunteerToTheWorld provides visa guidance as part of our pre-departure support.

Weather & Best Time to Visit

Ghana has a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. The south experiences two rainy seasons (April-July and September-October), while the north has a single rainy season (May-October). The dry harmattan winds from the Sahara blow December-February, bringing dusty, hazy conditions but pleasant temperatures.

    Best Time to Volunteer

    Cultural Tips for Ghana

Understanding local customs will help you connect more deeply with your host community and show respect for Ghanaian culture.

    Greetings & Respect

Ghanaians place great importance on greetings. Always greet elders first and use your right hand for handshakes and passing items — the left hand is considered disrespectful. Address older people as "Auntie" or "Uncle" even if they are not related to you. Take time to ask about someone's family before getting to business.

    Dress Code

Dress modestly, especially in rural and northern communities. Avoid very short shorts or revealing tops. Ghanaians take pride in their appearance — wearing neat, clean clothing shows respect. Consider purchasing locally made African fabric and having clothes tailored, which supports the local economy and is greatly appreciated.

    Food & Tipping

Ghanaian cuisine centres on fufu, banku, jollof rice and kenkey, usually served with soups and stews. Eat with your right hand when eating communally. Tipping is not obligatory but appreciated — 10% at restaurants is generous. Always accept food or drink when offered by your host family, as declining can be seen as rude.

    Photography

Always ask permission before photographing people, especially chiefs, elders and children. Some cultural sites and ceremonies may have restrictions on photography. Sharing photos with the people you photograph — even showing them on your phone screen — is a wonderful gesture that is always appreciated.

    Religion & Spirituality

Ghana is a deeply religious country — Christianity dominates the south while Islam is more common in the north. Traditional beliefs also play an important role. Be respectful of religious practices, dress appropriately when visiting places of worship, and avoid scheduling activities during Sunday church services or Friday prayers.

    Gift-Giving & Bargaining

Bringing small gifts from home (postcards, sweets, stationery) for your host family is a lovely gesture. In markets, bargaining is expected and part of the fun — start at about half the asking price and negotiate with a smile. Fixed-price shops and supermarkets do not expect bargaining.
