    Considerations for Costa Rica

Editorial summary, not legal or safety advice. Always verify current conditions with your home country's official travel advisory before booking.

    Destination editorial data last reviewed:

    Solo female travelers

Generally one of the easier Central American destinations for solo female travelers. Active backpacker and volunteer communities in San José, Monteverde, Puerto Viejo and the Nicoya Peninsula. Standard urban precautions in San José; rural placements are mostly low-risk.

    LGBTQ+ context

Costa Rica legalised same-sex marriage in 2020 and is one of the more LGBTQ+-friendly Central American countries. San José has a visible LGBTQ+ community. Rural acceptance is more uneven. Trans rights vary by region.

Costa Rica-specific scam and provider red flags

    • 'Eco-volunteer' programs that are functionally paid eco-tourism with a marketing layer.
    • Sea-turtle programs that allow tourist handling of adults or eggs — refuse.
    • Sloth and monkey 'sanctuaries' that allow tourist contact — refuse.
    • Operators that disappear from communication once payment is made (verify by direct contact with the in-country office before paying).

Questions to ask any Costa Rica provider in writing

    1. Is the conservation project registered with MINAE (Ministry of Environment and Energy)?
    2. Does the wildlife / animal program allow ANY tourist contact with animals?
    3. What's your in-country office address — and does the phone number actually pick up?
    4. What visa pathway do you recommend, and have you handled it successfully for past volunteers?

Plus the universal questions in our voluntourism red flags guide.

    Why Volunteer in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica is a global leader in conservation, with over 25% of its land protected as national parks and reserves. This small Central American nation contains nearly 5% of the world's biodiversity, making it a paradise for nature lovers and conservationists.

Our programs focus on protecting endangered species like sea turtles, preserving rainforests and cloud forests, and supporting sustainable community development. You'll work alongside local biologists and conservationists making real impact.

Beyond conservation, Costa Rica offers incredible adventures - zip-lining through the canopy, surfing Pacific waves, and exploring volcanic hot springs. The locals' "Pura Vida" philosophy makes this one of the friendliest places to volunteer.

What to Expect in Costa Rica

Practical information to help you prepare for your volunteer experience.

    Language

Spanish is the official language and spoken everywhere. English is widely understood in tourist areas, but much less so in rural communities where most volunteer projects operate. Learning basic Spanish before arrival will greatly enhance your experience — even simple phrases like "Pura Vida" (the national motto meaning pure life), "Buenos dias" and "Gracias" go a long way. Many programs offer Spanish lessons as part of the placement.

    Currency & Transport

The Costa Rican colon (CRC) is the local currency, though US dollars are accepted in many tourist areas. Expect to spend $20-35/day on food and transport. Public buses are reliable and affordable for getting between cities. Shared shuttles are popular for tourist routes. Uber operates in the Central Valley, and renting a 4x4 is recommended for remote areas. ATMs are widely available in towns.

    Health & Safety

No vaccinations are mandatory for entry, but hepatitis A, typhoid and routine boosters are recommended. Tap water is safe to drink in most of the country — one of the few Central American nations where this is the case. Costa Rica is one of the safest countries in Latin America, though petty theft can occur in tourist hotspots. Use strong insect repellent in jungle and coastal areas to protect against mosquitoes.

    Cultural Tips for Costa Rica

Understanding local customs will help you connect more deeply with your host community and embrace the Pura Vida lifestyle.

    Pura Vida Culture

"Pura Vida" is more than a greeting — it is a way of life. Costa Ricans (Ticos) use it to say hello, goodbye, thank you, and to express that life is good. Embrace this laid-back philosophy and you will fit right in. Ticos are famously friendly and will go out of their way to help visitors. Approach every interaction with warmth and patience.

    Tico Time

Costa Ricans have a relaxed approach to punctuality. Social events and casual meetings may start 15-30 minutes late — this is known as "Tico Time" and is completely normal. However, volunteer work schedules and official appointments should be treated with punctuality. Do not take lateness personally; it reflects a cultural emphasis on relationships over rigid schedules.

    Dress Code

Costa Rica has a casual dress culture. Light, breathable clothing is ideal for the tropical climate. Swimwear is fine at the beach but cover up when visiting towns, restaurants or churches. Ticos tend to dress neatly even in casual settings — clean and tidy clothing shows respect. Pack layers if visiting cloud forests or highlands where temperatures drop significantly.

    Tipping & Dining

A 10% service charge is automatically added to restaurant bills by law, so additional tipping is optional but appreciated for exceptional service. Tip tour guides $5-10 per person and porters $1-2 per bag. Coffee is a point of national pride — always accept when offered and compliment it. Costa Rican cuisine features gallo pinto (rice and beans), casados and fresh tropical fruits.

    Wildlife Interaction

Costa Rica takes wildlife protection seriously. Never touch, feed or chase wild animals — it is illegal and can result in fines. Keep a respectful distance from monkeys, sloths, toucans and sea turtles. Do not use flash photography near nesting turtles. Follow your guide's instructions at all times on wildlife excursions. Buying souvenirs made from animal products is illegal.

    Sustainability Ethos

Costa Rica runs on nearly 100% renewable energy and banned single-use plastics in 2021. Carry a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. Respect recycling systems at your accommodation and project site. Support local businesses over international chains. Ticos are passionate about protecting their natural heritage — demonstrating eco-conscious behaviour will earn you genuine respect and appreciation.

    What Volunteers Say

Hear from volunteers who have experienced the magic of Costa Rica's conservation programs firsthand.

"Releasing baby sea turtles into the ocean at sunrise was the most magical experience of my life. The conservation team taught me so much about marine biology and the importance of protecting these incredible creatures."

    Jessica Martinez

    Tortuguero Beach

"Volunteers from around the world bring fresh energy and dedication to our conservation efforts. Together, we've protected over 10,000 turtle nests this season alone."

    Carlos Rivera

    Project Coordinator

    Tortuguero Conservation

"Working in the cloud forest was surreal. The biodiversity is astounding - we saw toucans, howler monkeys, and countless species of frogs. Plus, I learned so much about sustainable forestry."
