Travel insurance for volunteers: 6 providers reference

World Nomads, IMG Global, Allianz, Travel Guard, SafetyWing, Seven Corners โ€” what each covers and what to ask before buying.

What we list, what we don't

The /tools/insurance hub lists six widely-known travel-insurance providers commonly used by volunteers: World Nomads, IMG Global, Allianz Travel, Travel Guard, SafetyWing, Seven Corners. We list them with names, sponsors, official URLs, and 1-line coverage scopes โ€” that's it. We don't publish prices because they change daily by traveller profile. We don't rank them.

This article walks through the framework you should apply when picking from the list.

Six coverage categories that matter for volunteers

Any volunteer-trip insurance discussion should cover:

  1. Medical evacuation โ€” the single biggest cost on most policies. Capped between $100K and $1M depending on plan.
  2. Trip cancellation โ€” pre-departure refund coverage. Not always offered on cheaper "nomad" plans.
  3. Gear & baggage โ€” laptop, camera, hiking gear coverage limits.
  4. Adventure activities โ€” many policies EXCLUDE motorbike riding, scuba below specific depths, trekking above specific altitudes. Read this section first.
  5. Pre-existing conditions โ€” some policies cover, some don't, some require a separate rider.
  6. 6. War, civil unrest, terrorism โ€” most policies exclude these. If your destination has an active advisory, check.

    The volunteer-specific gotcha

Most standard travel insurance policies have a phrase like "manual labour" or "unpaid work" buried in their exclusions. Volunteer work โ€” especially construction, agriculture, animal-handling, or rescue work โ€” can fall into this category. A claim related to your volunteer activity could be denied.

Always email the insurer BEFORE PURCHASING:

"I will be doing unpaid volunteer work at {program name} in {country}. Activities include {list โ€” be specific}. Is this covered under the policy or do I need a rider?"

    Get the answer in writing.

    How the 6 providers differ

Without quoting prices (they change), here's the general positioning each provider occupies in 2026:

  7. World Nomads โ€” backpacker / adventure-travel focused. Good for solo travellers. Adventure-activity coverage is broader than most. Has dedicated volunteer messaging.
  8. IMG Global โ€” long-standing global health insurer; deeper medical coverage. Used heavily by missionaries and long-term volunteers.
  9. Allianz Travel โ€” mainstream travel insurance. Comprehensive cancellation/baggage but often limited adventure coverage.
  10. Travel Guard โ€” owned by AIG. Solid baseline coverage. Strong on trip cancellation.
  11. SafetyWing โ€” "nomad insurance" subscription model, popular with digital nomads. Cheaper monthly rate; lower medical-evacuation cap than traditional policies. Best for healthy 18โ€“39-year-old volunteers on short trips.
  12. Seven Corners โ€” purpose-built mission/volunteer plans. Often partners with churches and university programs.
  13. This is not a ranking. It's a positioning summary for shortlisting before you get quotes.

    What to ask before paying

In addition to the volunteer-specific question above, ask:

  14. "What's the medical evacuation cap?"
  15. "What's the deductible per claim?"
  16. "Are pre-existing conditions covered automatically or by rider?"
  17. "Are {list adventure activities you might do} covered?"
  18. "How do I file a claim โ€” paper, app, phone?"
  19. The cheap policy with a $50,000 evac cap is not actually cheap if you end up in a remote clinic 200 km from a hospital that can treat your injury.

    Our editorial position

We don't take affiliate fees from any of these providers. We list them because each one is widely used and citable. We expect the list to expand or change as the market shifts โ€” propose additions via /contact.
